ITV Sinéad O'Connor in english

Mis en ligne en juillet-août 2007 par Catherine Saille-Roger Gotlib

* For your last album, Theology, you've had sessions in Dublin and London. Do you feel more confident with Dublin or with London, for the sessions ? *

I like both of them, really, but they're very different. I like both of them, but if I had to choose one, I would choose the acoustic one.

* What about them Keltic roots ? You recorded in Jamaica, you're coming from Bulgaria, going to broad again, what do you feel about your Keltic roots ? Is it important for you when you create your songs, or is it the music of the World ? *

I suppose, it's kinda not something you would be conscious of, as such, but is there, in your subconscious the whole time, it's part of your DNA, you know what I mean.

* Part of your inspiration ? *

No, just part of your DNA, it's part of the sound of our voice, or part of the way you hear melodies, ... You just hear it like an Irish person.

* We are representing Britain and live all over the world, like a Diaspora, our association is the Lighthouse for Briton people all around the world. Could you explain them what the "33" song means, why 33 ? *

They're almost based around, or inspired by Brittonical scriptures, some of the songs use little bits of scriptures, then the rest is my own thought or feelings or whatever, and some of the songs, every line of them appear "scriptures". 33 is one of the ones which appears "scriptures", which is "song 33". Every lign of that song comes from song 33, actually. It would take a long time to explain everything which the song is about, but... The Jewish people believe that songs have magical uses, that you can employ them for different things, say if somebody is taken into court, there's a particular song he would say to protect himself, or, somebody wants to knock your house down, he would say a particular song for that. Song 33 is a song you say when you're having a baby, for protection, it's a statement of trust and knowledge...

* What is "Darker than Blue" ? *

It depends, really, where you're coming from. To me, it means "sad", someone who's sadder than sad.

* You're not the sad person, are you ? *

I didn't write that song, Curtis Mayfield, actually,wrote the song...

* So, not your concern ? *

No, I didn't write the song.

* What about being in Brittany ? Do you feel something special being here or not ? *

Yeah, I'm delighted to, 'cause I've done this festival before, and I enjoyed it, actually, and it's like over the years there are not many gigs that you remember, but the last time we were here would be one that I would remember. It's just a fun festival to do, the whole time, all over the town...

* Is it the way people react, in the public ? *

To me, it was that way the whole time, it was not just at the gig, but really all over the town : there's all kind of crazy people in the cafés, all kind of lunatics everywhere...

* It took you about two years or more to think this new album, and the way you did it with two sessions, the acoustic and the electric. Is it an idea you had long before, or is it something somebody inspired you ? *

The record was an idea I had long before, but it wasn't supposed to be a double record : it was supposed to be only the acoustic record, but I had made some demos of the songs with a friend of mine, just for fun, which is the London sessions. I wanted to do this record acoustically, but when I told my friend, he was really upset, so he begged me to let him make it.

* So, you did it, and it's really wonderful. Do you have a receipt to keep your voice as great as it is, something special ? *

No, not really, just lots of cigarettes... (laughs)

* I get that ! Thank you very much, we are going to listen to you tonight. Is there a last message you could give to all the Britton people around the World, something – I know you did want to say something deep and give a message in your album – about your feelings, your own feelings about this century and the way we should live all over the World ? *

To me, I think the most important thing that we could do in our time is to rescue God from the legend, separate the concept of God and the legend, and understand that they are two different things, therefore actually employ God better than we are doing now.

* Very kind of you, thank you very much ! *

Thank you.
